Female Infertility Disorders
I don’t have periods any more – does this mean I can’t have a smear test?
I’m a 20 year-old female and after all that’s been in the news recently about cervical cancer, I was thinking of asking my GP for a smear test.
But on the other hand I’m not sure that I can. Due to an eating disorder when I was 17-18 I haven’t had a period since or had sex with anyone either (I’m a bit embarrassed about telling my GP that last part).
Does infertility lower the risk of cervical cancer. Or even raise it? I’ve been looking on google but can’t find any info that answers this. I’d rather know before going to the doctor’s.
Thank you to all who answered
Within the UK now, smear tests are only offered from the age of 25 from most GP surgeries, and they will then be offered every 3-5 years until the age of 65.
Having periods is nothing to do with it, but the fact that you’re still a virgin along with your age puts you at EXTREMELY low risk of cervical cancer.
This is the official NHS website about it where you’ll find out any information you ned to know. http://www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/cervical/
